You have to get up pretty early to beat the incredible volunteer members of the State Committee of the Association of Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades (AVBFB). This was the view from our Belmont office this morning as our elected Zone representatives from all over WA started a jam-packed weekend of meetings, briefings, discussions and decisions – all in pursuit of making things better for our 26,000 volunteers and the communities they serve and protect.
As well as working on some major forward steps for the Association, the Committee also had a briefing from Mark Bowen from DFES’ Rural Fire Division, who also generously gave up some of his Saturday for the greater good.
After a long day – that was made even longer for some with a very early-morning drive to Perth from regional WA – the Committee has retired for the night and will be back bright and early tomorrow to begin their second productive day of weekend work, before heading home to start their “day jobs” again on Monday.
Thanks to Mark and other paid staff who understand the value of all volunteer’s time and try to work in a way that allows maximum access and collaboration.
