The devastation of Yarloop is surely the final evidence that we need to change our approach to bush fire management.
Premier Colin Barnett entrusted Euan Ferguson with the task of advising on ways to change the system for the better.
Association President Dave Gossage AFSM was interviewed at length about the Ferguson Report by Adam Shand (pictured below) on Perth’s 6PR radio station on Tuesday, 3rd August.
The interview followed on from the release of a joint statement by the Association of Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades (AVBFB), Pastoralists and Graziers Association, WA Farmers Federation, the Bushfire Front, the State Emergency Services Volunteer Association and Locals Against Wildfire in support of the Ferguson Report including the establishment of an independent Rural Fire Service.
The interview focussed on fuel reduction and Rural Fire Service recommendations. Other matters flowed into the conversation including community resilience, relationships between services and unions, and a public clarification about the professionalism of trained bush fire fighters who happen to turn up when needed as volunteers.
This is recommended listening for those want to hear for themselves about these important public questions that are all about the best way to protect communities from bush fires and that includes the role and standing of volunteers in the bush fire sphere.
You can also hear from several volunteers that called the program with their own experiences forming their vies about an independent Rural Fire Service. Be assured, the callers were not solicited.
