Bushfire Volunteers has been working with Wines of WA to build relationships with wine producers at a local/regional level.
To this end, Wines of WA has have arranged for Geoff Cowey from The Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI.com.au) to conduct information sessions at several local volunteer brigades in grape-growing areas of WA. The sessions will include a presentation providing information on the mechanics of “smoke taint”, a tasting of some tainted wines and general discussion about working with the wine industry to ensure they understand the complexities of managing both planned and unplanned fires and our brigades have good relationships with and understanding of local growers and their work.
As we know, good mutually respectful relationships and understanding are key to the best possible outcomes for everyone
We hope that each session will be attended by as many Brigade members as possible and any Local Government officers related to the management of bushfire – or simply with an interest in the wine industry and science of smoke taint.
Confirmed events so far:
- Kalamunda Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade is hosting the first session at 7pm, Tuesday 26/11 at 20 Raymond Rd, Kalamunda.
- Bridgetown Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade is hosting a session at 10am, Thursday 28/11 at 8 Les Woodhead Ave, Bridgetown.
We are currently working to confirm meetings in the Augusta-Margaret River region, Mt Barker, Manjimup and Frankland River. Details will be made available on this site as soon as possible.
